Abstract
Introduction: Despite the Increasing attention to competency in medical science education, how to teach it has received less attention. Therefore, the aim of the current research is to identify the characteristics and components of competency-oriented medical science education.
Materials & Methods: This applied research was conducted using the qualitative content analysis method in two parts: documents and focused group discussion. The selection of cases and participants was done using a targeted approach, including sampling of special or unique cases. This study reviewed 14 articles and 2 books, with 14 faculty members and doctoral students with teaching experience in medical sciences participating. Validation of findings for both sections was carried out through peer review involvement.
Results: Based on the results, the elements and characteristics of competency-oriented medical science education were described in 4 main components including contextual factors-infrastructure, learner, the process of education, and evaluation-feedback and 11 sub-components and their characteristics.
Conclusion: Competency means the acquisition of transferable knowledge, the result of deep and meaningful learning. As a result, competency-oriented medical science education focuses on learning processes and includes active, collaborative teaching-learning methods, original evaluation, constructive feedback, and metacognitive awareness.
