Abstract
Introduction: One of the main goals of universities is to improve and develop students' academic performance. Study habits and skills are the methods that students use to study. These methods can significantly affect the level of learning and ultimately the academic and career progress of individuals. For this purpose, the present study was conducted to investigate the status of academic performance and study skills in students of the Department of Medical Sciences, Islamic Azad University, Bojnourd Branch.
Methods: This descriptive-cross-sectional study was conducted as a census on all students of medicine, nursing, midwifery, and laboratory sciences at Islamic Azad University, Bojnourd Branch, in the fall and winter of 1404. The data collection tool was the Palsane & Sharma Study Habits Inventory (PSSHI). The first part of the questionnaire included demographic information of the students, and the second part, the PSSHI questionnaire, contained 45 questions and had a score range of 0 to 90. The questions in the questionnaire covered 8 areas, including time management, physical condition, reading ability, note-taking, learning motivation, memory, taking exams, and health. Mean, frequency distribution, tables, and graphs were used for descriptive data analysis, and independent t-tests, analysis of variance, and Tukey-Kramer tests were used to answer the research hypotheses.
Results: Of the total 213 students studied, 179 were female and 34 were male, and the age group of 18-22 years had the highest frequency. In examining the frequency and mean score of study habits, The physical status domain had the highest mean (7.43 ± 1.86; 61.9%), while the memory domain had the lowest mean (3.58 ± 1.07; 44.7%). The mean score of the total study habit among students was 50.38 ± 8.74, which indicated their average status in terms of study habits and skills. There was no significant relationship between the demographic characteristics of gender, marital status, and place of residence with study habits, but there was a significant relationship between the demographic characteristics of major and academic year with study habits
Conclusion: The overall score of study habits among students of Bojnurd Azad Medical Sciences is average; but there is a long way to reach a good and ideal situation. Appropriate and practical solutions should be provided to encourage and motivate students to study more and create appropriate study habits in them.
